You're onboard Car No. 1061
Built 1948.
Served Philadelphia 1948-89.
Purchased by Muni 1992.
Exterior paint design: Pacific Electric (Southern California).

This car is painted to honor Pacific Electric, which ran PCC streetcars from 1940 to 1955.

Southern California once boasted one of the great interurban train systems in the world—the mighty Pacific Electric (PE)—running from LA east to San Bernardino, west to Santa Monica, south to Long Beach, and to dozens of cities in-between, using many types of streetcars, but all known as the ‘Big Red Cars’ to Southern Californians.

The 30 Pacific Electric PCCs were double-ended with front and center doors, a unique design. Trains of up to three PCCs ran primarily on the line from Downtown LA to Burbank and Glendale.

Muni No. 1061 is painted in the red, orange, and silver livery of the PE PCCs, inspired by the ‘Daylight’ steam train colors of PE’s big brother Southern Pacific. Today, every F-line trip passes SP’s old headquarters at One Market.
