Market Street Railway depends on support from our members and friends to preserve historic transit in San Francisco. We don’t get a nickel from any government source, but there are several ways you can help us keep the past present in the future.

While we operate with very low overhead, thanks to the volunteers who fill many functions performed by paid staff in other non-profits, we still need financial support to pay rent on space for our archives, and — importantly — to support our education and outreach programs. Donations in any amount are most welcome.

By shopping our online store or visiting our San Francisco Railway Museum & Gift Shop, you’re providing valuable help to Market Street Railway. All the net proceeds from merchandise sales support our mission of preserving historic transit in San Francisco. And the merchandise we design ourselves, such as our vintage travel series, is unique to us, so it makes great gifts.
Other Ways you Can Help Market Street Railway
While we hope everyone interested in preserving historic transit in San Francisco will join Market Street Railway, you can also support our work in addition to (or instead of) becoming a member. You can also support Market Street Railway and historic transit in many ways other than membership, outlined on this page.
Few organizations empower volunteers like Market Street Railway does. Individual volunteers have brought additional vintage streetcars to San Francisco, initiated route extensions, and created new programs for the organization. Other volunteers, working in teams, have made many enhancements to the historic streetcars and cable cars, and to our San Francisco Railway Museum. It was Market Street Railway volunteers who made the F-Market & Wharves streetcar line a reality. We will do the same for the E-line and the extension to Fort Mason. Come and be a part of it, or lend a hand in many other ways to keep the past present in San Francisco’s future.
