We at Market Street Railway are delighted to partner again with SFMTA/Muni to give transit lovers the chance to ride vintage streetcars, cable cars, and buses, while learning how public transit spurred the growth of San Francisco from a village to the world-class City we enjoy today.
The family-friendly Muni Heritage Weekend lets you ride vintage streetcars and buses and special cable cars that rarely operate. The world’s oldest cable car (1883), one of the oldest electric streetcars (1896), the very first streetcar Muni owned (1912), and the wildly popular English open-top “Boat Tram” (1934) will all be carrying passengers between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, September 23-24.
Our nonprofit started up in 1977 to preserve a Muni trolley bus. Buses are a very important part of San Francisco transit history, too, and we now have a section of our website devoted to them, including an overview of bus history in the city, and profiles of the most historic buses in Muni’s vintage fleet (several of which we reacquired for Muni).
