We at Market Street Railway are delighted to partner again with SFMTA/Muni to give transit lovers the chance to ride vintage streetcars, cable cars, and buses, while learning how public transit spurred the growth of San Francisco from a village to the world-class City we enjoy today.
Our San Francisco Railway Museum is picking up kudos from visitors and influencers alike.
The family-friendly Muni Heritage Weekend lets you ride vintage streetcars and buses and special cable cars that rarely operate. The world’s oldest cable car (1883), one of the oldest electric streetcars (1896), the very first streetcar Muni owned (1912), and the wildly popular English open-top “Boat Tram” (1934) will all be carrying passengers between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, September 23-24.
UPDATE: The City and County of San Francisco is now allowing indoor museums to reopen with limited capacity, but with no F-line streetcars running, there are few people in the area. We will most likely reopen when F-line historic streetcar service resumes No date has yet been set for that; we will announce plans on this website when decisions are made.
Muni Heritage Weekend got off to a great start last night (Thursday), with a VIP reception at our San Francisco Railway Museum. Upwards of 70 invited business, neighborhood, and civic leaders heard Mayor London Breed extol San Francisco’s history and the role transit played in making the city what it is today. Market Street Railway President Rick Laubscher paid tribute to transit pioneers through the decades, whom he described as “fighters for equality, for inclusion, for opportunity”, and lauded the team that brought Sacramento-Clay Cable Car 19 back to life. They include: Project Manager Arne Hansen, the shop superintendent; Electric Transit Mechanic Dave Kerrigan, who installed a complete braking system, Master Carpenter Antoni Cunha, who repaired and strengthened the running boards; Painters Danny Hicks and Henry Pegueros, who did a masterful job of painting, polishing the brass, and detailing the cable car.
