Conductors were (and still are today) an integral part to the operations of streetcars. Even some famous figures, such as Dr. Maya Angelou, began their working careers are streetcar conductors. Conductors were responsible for operational and safety duties that do not involve actual operation of the streetcar, such as taking your fare and punching your ticket. The conductor title is most common in North American railway operations.
