Here’s a great chance to see memorable historic photos of San Francisco transit. And, if you come on January 27, bask in the perfection of a fully restored vintage Muni bus and hear from photography and history experts.

The FREE show, “120 years: SFMTA Photo Archive 1903-2023” taps into twelve decades of image making by photographers working for our city’s transit agencies. The show, complied by SFMTA archivist and photographer Jeremy Menzies from the agencies wonderful photo archive (which you can access online!!) is running through February 3 at the Harvey Milk Photo Center located at 50 Scott Street, right next to the N-Judah stop at the east portal of the Sunset Tunnel, in Duboce Park.

Hours for the exhibit are Tuesday-Thursday, 3 pm-8:30 pm and Saturdays, 11 am-4:30 pm.

If you can, come this Saturday, January 27. From 10am-2pm, Muni’s restored 1956 Mack motor coach will be staged on Duboce Avenue with an informational display about its history and the restoration process, which was meticulous.  At 11am, SFMTA Photo Archive and Harvey Milk Photo Center staff will lead a guided tour of the Photo Archive exhibit.  Meet at the bus for the tour, exhibit curators will be on hand for Q&A after the tour. The Mack will not be offering rides on Saturday, but it will be 2024 Muni Heritage Weekend, September 21-22, 10 am-4 pm, offering free rides (with other vintage buses and streetcars) leaving from our San Francisco Railway Museum.

This is a wonderful exhibit. Please come out and support SFMTA’s efforts to catalog and share San Francisco’s transit history through unmatched photographs. As City budgets tighten, it’s more important than ever for transit users and supporters to demonstrate their support.
