You're onboard Car No. 1063
Built 1948.
Served Philadelphia 1948-92.
Purchased by Muni 1992.
Exterior paint design: Baltimore MD.

This car is painted to honor Baltimore, which ran PCC streetcars from 1936 to 1963. One of the first cities to operate PCCs, Baltimore eventually acquired 275, just over a quarter of its huge streetcar fleet.

A contest by the Maryland Institute of Art yielded an elaborate early PCC paint scheme of blue lower body, cream window area, gray roof, and orange belt rail. But later in their life, to save money while keeping the cars visible, Baltimore Transit Co. painted the cars all yellow, keeping the gray roof.

This paint scheme was used during the term of Baltimore Mayor Tom D’Alesandro, Jr., whose daughter, Speaker of the House of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco), rode cars like this as a child. This paint scheme was used for the PCC featured in Barry Levinson’s movie ‘Avalon’ as well.
