Come ride the not-often-seen streetcar 737 representing Zürich, Switzerland, built in 1952, by going on this 2-hour excursion on Muni’s oldest surviving rail line, the J-Church line, about a 13-mile round-trip. The excursion is on Sunday, April 12, 1:30-3:30pm.

Destinations include: Market Street, the Castro, scenic Mission Dolores Park, Noe Valley, Bernal Heights, Glen Park, Balboa Park, and Cameron Beach Yard, Muni’s storage and maintenance facility for the historic streetcar fleet (normally off limits to the public).

Car 737 was actually built for Brussels, Belgium; but, at the request of former Mayor Gavin Newsom, it currently wears the blue and white livery of San Francisco’s sister city Zürich, Switzerland. While its design was heavily influenced by the PCC style streetcars used today on the F-line, car 737 is much narrower in order to be able to negotiate the narrow streets of European cities.

Opened in 1917, the J-Church line is the oldest surviving streetcar line in San Francisco. From Market Street, it runs south mostly on Church Street, but skirts through scenic Mission Dolores Park and around the steep slopes of Dolores Heights via private right-of-way. Originally terminating at Church & 30th Streets in Noe Valley, the line was extended to Balboa Park in 1991 via the “Bernal Cut,” an excavation originally done as a single-track steam train right-of-way by the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad Company in the 1860s. The cut was widened in 1929 to its present-day width.

Seating is limited to 35 passengers (the seating capacity of the car), so sign up today. For this excursion, the fee is $50 for members of the public, but Market Street Railway members receive a 25% discount (via a coupon code at check-out). All proceeds go to support Market Street Railway in its work to keep San Francisco’s transit history alive.

The trip begins and ends at the San Francisco Railway Museum at 77 Steuart Street just opposite the Embarcadero from the landmark Ferry Building. The streetcar will stop a few times for several minutes where you will be welcome to get out and take pictures. However, please note that the number and duration of such stops will be subject to timing and line conditions.

The boat tram is one of twelve built in 1934 for an English seaside resort. In 1984, car 228 was acquired for Muni with the help of Market Street Railway. Seating is limited to 44 passengers (the seating capacity of the car), so sign up today. For this long excursion, the rate is $15 for Market Street Railway members and $20 for non-members. All proceeds go to support Market Street Railway in its work to keep San Francisco’s transit history alive.

“Night Train”

Market Street Railway is hosting its first ever night-time excursion. Come ride Muni’s first streetcar, car 1, along the historic F-line from the Castro to Fisherman’s Wharf and back all lit up. While riding, you’ll be able to enjoy drinks that will be available (your first is free) as well as the sounds of a live performance by the local band Mesquite and Mustard.  The excursion is on Sunday, April 26, 7-9pm.

Car 1 had its inaugural run out Geary Street on December 28, 1912, piloted by then Mayor James Rolph, Jr. It ran for 39 years until 1951 when it was retired from service. In 1962, it was restored to its original condition to serve as the centerpiece of Muni’s 50th anniversary. Car 1 was used during the summer trolley festivals during the 1980s and became part of the new F-Market line fleet in 1995. In 2009-2010, it was completely restored and returned to regular service on October 6, 2012, almost a century after it was originally built.

Seating is limited to 42 passengers, so sign up today. For this excursion, the fee is $60 for members of the public, but Market Street Railway members receive a 25% discount (via a coupon code at check-out). All proceeds go to support Market Street Railway in its work to keep San Francisco’s transit history alive.

The trip begins and ends at the Castro Street F-line stop (on 17th Street).

  • In the event that car 1 is unavailable, another streetcar will substitute.
  • MSR members, please use coupon code “2015trolleytour” at checkout for your discount.
