Come ride the open-top “Boat Tram*” (Blackpool, England car 228), built in 1934, by going on this 2-hour excursion on Muni’s oldest surviving rail line, the J-Church line, about a 13-mile round-trip. The excursion is on Sunday, July 19, 1:30-3:30pm.

Destinations include: Market Street, the Castro, scenic Mission Dolores Park, Noe Valley, Bernal Heights, Glen Park, Balboa Park, and Cameron Beach Yard, Muni’s storage and maintenance facility for the historic streetcar fleet (normally off limits to the public).

The boat tram is one of twelve built in 1934 for an English seaside resort. In 1984, car 228 was acquired for Muni with the help of Market Street Railway. It’s actually crossed the Atlantic twice: in 1976, it ran in Philadelphia during that city’s bicentennial celebration, then returned to Blackpool where it sat unused until Muni acquired it.

Opened in 1917, the J-Church line is the oldest surviving streetcar line in San Francisco. From Market Street, it runs south mostly on Church Street, but skirts through scenic Mission Dolores Park and around the steep slopes of Dolores Heights via private right-of-way. Originally terminating at Church & 30th Streets in Noe Valley, the line was extended to Balboa Park in 1991 via the “Bernal Cut,” an excavation originally done as a single-track steam train right-of-way by the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad Company in the 1860s. The cut was widened in 1929 to its present-day width.

Seating is limited to 44 passengers (the seating capacity of the car), so sign up today. For this excursion, the fee is $50 for members of the public, but Market Street Railway members receive a 25% discount (via a coupon code at check-out). All proceeds go to support Market Street Railway in its work to keep San Francisco’s transit history alive.

The trip begins and ends at the San Francisco Railway Museum at 77 Steuart Street just opposite the Embarcadero from the landmark Ferry Building. The streetcar will stop a few times for several minutes where you will be welcome to get out and take pictures. However, please note that the number and duration of such stops will be subject to timing and line conditions.

  • In the event that car 228 is unavailable or inclement, another streetcar will substitute.
  • MSR members, please use coupon code “2015trolleytour” at checkout for your discount.
  • Please bring receipt with you at time of tour. Souvenir tickets will be provided.
  • Please arrive at least 15 minutes before departure time.

In 1962, it was restored to its original condition to serve as the centerpiece of Muni’s 50th anniversary. Car 1 was used during the summer trolley festivals during the 1980s and became part of the new F-Market line fleet in 1995. In 2006, it was removed from service due to a wiring problem. In 2009-2010, it was completely restored by Brookville Equipment Company of Pennsylvania under a $1.8 million contract that included total rebuilding of the trucks, motors, and running gear, as well as reconstruction of the car body and installation of low voltage electrical circuits for lighting, switch control, and communications. It returned to regular service on October 6, 2012, almost a century after it was originally built.Seating is limited to 48 passengers (the seating capacity of the car), so sign up today.
