Trolley Excursion, April 26 2015
April 26, 7:00pm – San Francisco Municipal Railway Car no. 1
Market Street Railway is hosting its first ever night-time excursion. Come ride Muni’s first streetcar, car 1, along the historic F-line from the Castro to Fisherman’s Wharf and back all lit up. While riding, you’ll be able to enjoy drinks that will be available (your first is free) as well as the sounds of a live performance by the local band Mesquite and Mustard. The excursion is on Sunday, April 26, 7-9pm.
Car 1 had its inaugural run out Geary Street on December 28, 1912, piloted by then Mayor James Rolph, Jr. It ran for 39 years until 1951 when it was retired from service. In 1962, it was restored to its original condition to serve as the centerpiece of Muni’s 50th anniversary. Car 1 was used during the summer trolley festivals during the 1980s and became part of the new F-Market line fleet in 1995. In 2009-2010, it was completely restored and returned to regular service on October 6, 2012, almost a century after it was originally built.
Seating is limited to 42 passengers, so sign up today. For this excursion, the fee is $60 for members of the public, but Market Street Railway members receive a 25% discount (via a coupon code at check-out). All proceeds go to support Market Street Railway in its work to keep San Francisco’s transit history alive.
The trip begins and ends at the Castro Street F-line stop (on 17th Street).
- In the event that car 1 is unavailable, another streetcar will substitute.
- MSR members, please use coupon code “2015trolleytour” at checkout for your discount.
Grandparent’s & Grandchildren’s Day Tour
April 25, 1:00pm & 2:00pm – Blackpool, England Car No. 228
Enjoy a special streetcar tour aboard our famous Blackpool, England “Boat Tram” from the San Francisco Railway Museum along the Embarcadero to Pier 39. There will be two trips at 1pm and 2pm. Our very own Streetcar Conductor will give you a guided tour of San Francisco’s waterfront.
The boat tram is one of twelve built in 1934 for an English seaside resort. In 1984, car 228 was acquired for Muni with the help of Market Street Railway. It’s actually crossed the Atlantic twice: in 1976, it ran in Philadelphia during that city’s bicentennial celebration, then returned to Blackpool where it sat unused until Muni acquired it.
Seating is limited to 44 passengers (the seating capacity of the car), so sign up today. For this long excursion, the rate is $15 for Market Street Railway members and $20 for non-members. All proceeds go to support Market Street Railway in its work to keep San Francisco’s transit history alive.
- In the event of inclement weather or the boat not being available, another streetcar will substitute.
- Market Street Railway Members, please use coupon code: “blackpool” at checkout for your discount.
