Sail on the Blackpool Boat Tram May 6 to Celebrate the Twin Peaks Tunnel Centennial!
The Twin Peaks Tunnel opened in 1918, bringing Muni streetcars to a new part of town. It’s sunnier West of Twin Peaks now than it was then, so we’re celebrating the tunnel centennial by bringing out the open-top “Boat Tram*” (Blackpool, England car 228), built in 1934, for a two-hour excursion from Cameron Beach Yard (permanent home of San Francisco’s historic streetcar fleet). We will leave from the southeast corner of Geneva & San Jose Avenues, next to the historic brick car house across from the Balboa Park BART station on Sunday, May 6, at 1:30 pm sharp, returning around 3:30 pm.
We’ll traverse the three streetcar lines that the Twin Peaks Tunnel made possible: the M-Ocean View to West Portal, then out the L-Taraval to the Zoo and back, and then the K-Ingleside to return to Cameron Beach Yard.
The boat tram is one of twelve built in 1934 for the English seaside resort of Blackpool, where three of these wonderful streetcars still operate. In 1984, car 228 was acquired by Market Street Railway for Muni. It’s actually crossed the Atlantic twice: in 1976, it ran in Philadelphia during that city’s bicentennial celebration, then returned to Blackpool where it sat unused until Market Street Railway acquired it.
Seating is limited to 44 passengers (the seating capacity of the car), and we expect it to sell out quickly. For this excursion, the fee is $50 for members of the public, but Market Street Railway members receive a 25% discount (via the coupon code below at check-out). All proceeds go to support Market Street Railway in its work to keep San Francisco’s transit history alive.
If the weather is inclement, Muni’s very first streetcar, Car No. 1, built in 1912 will substitute.
- MSR members, please use coupon code “2018trolleytour” at checkout for your discount. This is only for Market Street Railway members and, if they like, one guest. Please don’t use this code if you are not a member; it’s a member benefit, and we will check.
- Please bring receipt with you at time of tour. Souvenir tickets will be provided.
- Please arrive at least 15 minutes before departure time.
