In Memoriam: Bob Richardson
Bob Richardson, Market Street Railway’s volunteer coordinator for many years, passed away on May 13, 2001 at the age of 72, of complications following successful throat surgery.

A lifelong transit enthusiast and unabashed booster of the F-line, Bob organized, trained and supervised our docents during special events. He also found time to assist in the F-line car cleaning program as a Saturday afternoon car monitor. In addition to his generous contributions to Market Street Railway, Bob served on several community boards including Caltrain’s Citizens Advisory Committee and East Palo Alto’s transit planning committee.

At his memorial service on May 27, R.B. Jones, mayor of East Palo Alto expressed her community’s appreciation for Bob’s contributions and for his friendship, and then followed with a declaration proclaiming May 27, 2001 to be “Robert Bruce ’Bob’ Richardson Day.”

A multi-lingual psychologist for the San Jose Unified School District, Dr. Bob, as he was affectionately called, worked with children with special needs. He often said that his only frustration was that he could not do enough for them. His work in the field of child psychology, beginning with his doctoral thesis on bilingual education earned in the late 1960s, has been regarded by many as far reaching and ahead of its time.

Market Street Railway has lost an enthusiastic and valued volunteer. We will miss his cheerful smile, his willingness to lend a hand and his tireless ability to “mobilize the troops.”
