| Early in the summer of 2002, W.H. “Chip” Palmer, a past director and charter member of Market Street Railway, and one of the original Trolley Festival and F-line operators, passed away of liver failure, a complication of his long-term bout with Crohn’s Disease.
In Chip’s 30-year career with Muni, he served as a cable car gripman, a Muni Metro operator, and an operator for the first two Trolley Festivals, as well as the opening of the F-line in 1995. “You could always count on Chip for those late night streetcar moves in and out of Duboce Yard and clearance tests around the Muni system,” said his friend, former MSR director Steve Ferrario. “His quiet, helpful demeanor will be missed at Mint Division, as well as by all who knew him.”
“Chip was one of the most-respected members of our organization, and one of Muni“s most respected operators for three decades,” said MSR President Rick Laubscher. “We pay tribute to Chip’s life, and his many contributions to the success of the F-line, a legacy that will endure.”
